In Defense of Getting Lost

[1] These days, almost nobody gets lost. A phone in our pocket tells us where to turn, how long the trip will take and even where to stop for coffee. It is hard to argue against such a useful tool. Still, I believe we have lost something valuable along the way.

[2] When we follow a voice that says “turn left in two hundred meters,” we stop paying attention to the streets themselves. Several studies on spatial memory suggest that people who constantly rely on navigation apps build weaker mental maps than those who plan their routes by themselves. In other words, the more the device remembers for us, the less we remember on our own.

[3] Getting lost, on the other hand, forces us to observe. We notice a church tower, a market, the position of the sun. We ask strangers for help and sometimes discover a bookshop or a park we would never have found otherwise. Mistakes, in this sense, are not wasted time; they are part of how we learn a place.

[4] I am not suggesting that we throw our phones into the river. When you are late for a job interview, a map app is a blessing. My proposal is more modest: once a week, try to reach a familiar destination without looking at the screen. At first you may feel uncomfortable, but little by little the city will stop being a list of instructions and become a place you truly know.

Reading Buddies: Volunteers Needed

Are you a high school or university student with two free hours a week? The Riverside Community Library is looking for volunteers to join Reading Buddies, a program that helps children aged seven to ten improve their reading skills.

Volunteers meet the same child every Tuesday or Thursday afternoon, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. During the first hour, the pair reads a book together; during the second, they play word games and write short stories. You don’t need teaching experience: all volunteers attend a three-hour training session before they start, and a librarian is always present to help.

Why join? Many of our past volunteers say the experience taught them as much as it taught the children. You will practice communication and patience, and you will receive a certificate of service hours, which many universities accept as part of their community service requirements.

To apply, fill in the form at the main desk or send an email to the library’s education office before the end of the month. Please include your name, your school and the afternoon you prefer. Places are limited to twenty volunteers, so don’t wait too long!

If you cannot volunteer but would like to help, you can donate children’s books in good condition. Donations are received Monday to Saturday at the main entrance.

What type of text is this, and who is it mainly written for?

Un buen resumen incluye qué es el programa, quién puede participar y cómo, sin detalles menores.

Cooler Roofs, Cooler Cities

[1] On a sunny afternoon, the surface of a dark roof can be more than thirty degrees hotter than the air around it. Multiply that by thousands of buildings and you get what scientists call the “urban heat island”: cities that stay several degrees warmer than the countryside, especially at night, when buildings and streets slowly release the heat they absorbed during the day.

[2] One of the simplest responses to this problem is also one of the oldest. In many hot regions, people have painted their houses white for centuries. Light colors reflect a large part of the sunlight that reaches them, while dark colors absorb it and turn it into heat. Modern “cool roofs” apply the same principle with special coatings that reflect even more radiation.

[3] The benefits go beyond comfort. When a roof stays cooler, the rooms below it need less air conditioning, so electricity bills drop and power plants burn less fuel. In neighborhoods where few families can afford air conditioning, a cooler home can make a real difference to the health of elderly people during heat waves.

[4] Cool roofs are not a perfect solution, however. In places with long, cold winters, a reflective roof may increase the energy needed for heating. For this reason, experts recommend them mainly for warm climates, and they suggest combining them with trees and green spaces, which cool the air by providing shade and releasing water vapor.

In paragraph 2, the word coatings is closest in meaning to…

Piensa quiénes son “them” y qué recibieron a cambio.

Read the text and answer the question.

What is the main purpose of the text?
  1. A) To describe why cities are usually warmer than the countryside at night
  2. B) To explain how reflective roofs can reduce heat in cities and what their limits are
  3. C) To persuade families in cold regions to paint their houses white

Respuesta correcta: B)

Pregunta 2: Escritura creativa: formas verbales (pasado continuo y pasado simple)
Choose the option that correctly completes the sentence.
While the students ______ the chemistry experiment, the lights suddenly ______ off.
  1. A) were doing – went
  2. B) did – were going
  3. C) have done – go

Respuesta correcta: A)
