A Week Without My Phone — by Daniel, 16, Pereira

Last month our English teacher gave us a strange challenge: spend seven days without using our phones, except to call our parents. Most of my classmates laughed. I laughed too, but I accepted, mainly because the prize was an extra point in the final exam.

The first two days were terrible. I kept touching my pocket, looking for something that wasn’t there. At night I didn’t know what to do, so I went to bed at nine, which my mother found very suspicious. On the third day, I took out an old guitar that my uncle gave me years ago. I couldn’t play a single song and there were no online tutorials to follow, so I just tried, again and again, until my fingers hurt.

By the end of the week, I could play two simple songs, I had finished a novel I’d started in January, and I had talked more with my grandfather than in the whole previous year. He told me how he met my grandmother at a dance in Manizales.

I’m using my phone again now. But I leave it in the kitchen when I go to sleep, and the guitar is next to my bed.

Why did Daniel’s mother probably find his behaviour “suspicious”?

The Floating Library

In 2019, a retired teacher named Elvira Rojas had an unusual idea. Many children in the small villages along the Magdalena River did not have books at home, and the nearest public library was more than two hours away by road. Elvira bought an old wooden boat, painted it yellow and blue, and filled it with 600 books donated by families from Barranquilla and Cartagena.

Today, the boat visits eight villages every month. It stops in each village for two days. On the first day, children choose books and listen to stories under the trees near the river. On the second day, they return the books they borrowed on the previous visit and take new ones home.

At the beginning, Elvira worked alone. Now four university students help her during their holidays, and a local fisherman, Don Aurelio, drives the boat. The project does not receive money from the government; it depends on small donations and on a book fair that Elvira organizes every December.

“The river was always our road,” Elvira says. “Now it is also our library.”

Who drives the boat now?
